The Colts took on Credition Colts on The Rectory and after a tough game that looked to be ending at 5~26 they came back to score the final points to end the game at 12~26.
Try. Gurney.
Final try. Page, conversion. Pocknell,
Saracens kicked off to us, they were playing towards the Dockyard. we took the ball on but lost it forward, they won the scum pushing us slightly, attacked but lost the ball, we quickly put it to Sam Fincham just outside our twenty-two who breezed down the left hand touchline to score in the corner, Leighton Stark converted and we were 7~0 up inside a couple of minutes.
Saracens evened up the scoring with a seven pointer of their own. we were on our line and driving out but were driven back over our try line and had to touch down.
From the scrum they quickly put the ball to the backs for the No. 13 to go in unopposed near to the posts, the conversion was a simple one and the scores were level. 7~7.
Some minutes later Andy Pond was yellow carded.
On eighteen minutes we had a speedy run down the left wing, stopped inside their twenty-two the referee blew, presumably for some infringement by them.
Ethan Hilland did a quick tap to himself and made the yards to the line and managed to touch down amongst a crowd of defenders. The conversion missed 12~7.
Not many minutes later a third try this time from Luke Stannard who went over in much the same place as the previous try from a scrum on the far side of the pitch. The ball went up and down the line a couple of times before he took it over from a tackle player. The conversion was missed. 17~7.
We were now back to full strength.
A short spell of good fast supporting play took us deep into their twenty-two, they stopped us illegally, we did a quick tap penalty and after a yard or two the runner was stopped but Hayden Thomas took over and crossed for the five points, and Leighton Stark converted. 24~7 on the half hour.
Josh Martin had to come off and Dickie Duffield took him up to the Cumberland for an X ray. Sadly the pair saw nothing more of the match.
On forty minutes Saracens won a penalty and from their line kicked for touch but the ball stayed in, Sam Fincham had a run, then to Matt Neyle who from just inside their half ran towards the posts with a couple of sidesteps to score under the crossbar. Leighton Stark converted. 31~7.
Then an exchange from the sidelines while a scrum was forming up and directed at Hayden Thomas, who was having another good game, evidently the management thought he might go in as hooker.
I forget his exact words but basically shouted back that he was not keen.
Back came the reply, “ You have to be like an adjustable spanner”.
The scrum went on.
Then deep into injury time from a tap penalty that Ethan Hilland took on, when stopped the ball went to the backs ending with Manasa Tamanikairukuiovalau who scored in the corner on the roadside, the Leighton Stark conversion went over.
The score at halftime was 38~7.
It almost looked as if Saracens were only spectators, but they had their moments with some good straight runners but our defence, once again, was up to it.
The scrums were even and on the whole both side lineouts were working well.
Five minutes in to the second half Saracens got to our line, they won a series of about five scrums, while they had been pushing us slightly in the first half, for this series of scrums we pushed them and once stole the ball.
On the last one after a series of defended attacks, they cleverly changed tack and did a quick high chip to the left wing, two of their forwards were there and the No. 5 caught well just inside our twenty-two and was fast enough to beat the defender coming across and dive over. The conversion was a good one from the sidelines and they had fourteen points on the board. 38~14.
I missed our next score but it was a second by Manasa Tamanikairukuiovalau about eighteen minutes into the half. The conversion was missed and we were 43~14 ahead.
It was not till minute thirty-five that we scored our next and final try.
We continued to play fast with lots of support for the ball carrier and with lots of calling.
We did very little wrong but Saracens defended these really well and would come back at us only to lose the ball and it all start again.
The last try came from a scrum to them on their line, they kept the ball and sent it along the line, one of the centres found himself only just off his line with Tom Richards, now playing blindside flank. not far off, he made the mistake of hesitating, go left or right? with the hesitation, Tom pushed him back over the line and stole the ball to fall and score about six feet to one side of the streetside post. The Leighton Stark conversion should have gone over as a formality but it noisily rattled the nearside post and fell dead.
The game went on for another five minutes before the referee blew for full time.
We put on another display of really good rugby with lots of quick passing and carrying with supporting players calling and with not many lost balls considering how much possession we had.
Our speed down the left wing was impressive.
Saracens were probably unlucky not to score more points but came up against another good defencive display by a Services team.
