We played some super rugby for 80% of the game after going ahead in the first few minutes.
We stayed ahead, apart from one brief period when they drew level, until ten minutes before the end when the scores became level again,
Then there were two kickable penalties to them to win the game, they missed the first, then after eight minutes of injury time they got a second chance to win and this time did so.
I have no doubt we were the better team but every now and again we did something poor and Exeter jumped on it, They defended really well, they had to otherwise the score line would have run away from them. They had three or four players who took their attacks on fast and straight and were a danger all the game.

Our first score started after we had kicked off to them and we stole the ball, Tom Richard sold a lovely dummy and it was taken, Ewan Piercy had a great run to pass to Jack Jones who scored under defencive pressure, and Leighton Stark converted. 0~7.
Then Saracens closed the gap after a floated pass was taken high up, he nearly dropped it but managed to hang on and run in from just inside their half. The conversion hit the far side post. 5~7.
On twenty-one minutes Saracens were mauling well on the left wing and got to our twenty-two when we stole their ball and made good ground into their half but went into touch, they won the lineout but lost sight of a loose ball, Luke Stannard picked it up and it ended with Sam Fincham who scored under pressure. The conversion was missed. 5~12.
Then Olly Mytton of the Colts scored, Tom Richards had a good run and won a penalty in front of the posts, we chose to tap and go and it ended with Olly who made the score. The conversion was missed. 5~17.
At this point, we really looked in control but then They won a penalty and went for a line out on the right wing, they held their catcher up in the air for a long time while deciding what to do, “Put him down” shouted the referee. They did and the ball went to the backs for one of the centres to burst through the middle and score under the crossbar, the simple conversion went over. 12~17.
On the half hour and minor dust up that was something and nothing saw Sam Fincham and one of their players yellow carded.
The second bit of sloppy play that cost us the game. Close to half time they were attacking on the left, it got scrappy for a moment then one of their players made a decisive break, difficult to judge distance from the far side of the pitch but it looked like he ran straight and close to the sideline from halfway, he must have run past five players who looked like they could have simply pushed him in to touch, but none of them did so, as he went past each player Dickie Duffield got more and more cross and by the time he had scored Dickie was really wild and quite right too, The conversion missed, well it didn’t miss it never got to the posts, it went high, into the breeze, and paused at its peak and fell to earth only about three-quarters of the way there. 17~17.
They had levelled the score on the half-time whistle..
The line out wen well apart from one of two throws and we did steal one of theirs, we were on top in the scrums and now and again pushing them seriously to win a penalty.
We played really well but gave them twelve points.

The second half kicked off with us playing into the wind.
On six minutes a try to us after we stole the ball, Ewan Piercy had a good run on the right wing, decided to chip the defence and was able to collect his own chip, made more ground then gave it to Tom Richards who made more ground to give it to Charlie Newcombe who scored near the far post. Leighton Stark converted easily. 17~24.

Then a moment of amusement. right in front of us one of their players made a late tackle which the referee blew up for. “If it was any later I could have timed it with a sundial” shouted Dickie Duffield, everyone laughed even their player, the referee blew and called Dickie over to have a word with him, he could not help smiling either, as Dickie walked off suitably but cheerfully told off, Pickles said to him “What’s that between your legs? it’s your tail” more laughter.
Then a try to us from the Colts scrum-half Rohan Johnson, who was having a decent game. In front of their posts, we won a penalty, we tapped it and Rohan took it and was able to reach for the touchdown under a bit of pressure from the Saracens defenders.
Leighton Stark converted. 17~ 31. We didn’t take the ball well from the restart, we fiddled around with it not being positive then they stole it and attacked, I thought we had disrupted their attack but clearly not because their left winger ran it over and halfway towards the posts. The conversion went over.
Ethan Millard collected a yellow card.

Then in to the last ten minutes of normal time they scored again and with the conversion levelled the score at 31~31.
With a noisy crowd behind them, they sniffed a win, the game played on for five minutes into injury time, and then they won a penalty in front of the posts but a little way out, kick it and they would probably have won, they missed it.
The game went on for another three minutes when they won another penalty a little closer this time and to one side. The crowd went quiet then as it went between the posts the crowd and their players went wild. They had won with the last kick of the game.
I have to say we lost it with a couple of sloppy bits of play, but for those we would have won by a decent margin. As it was we had to settle for two bonus points.
The Colts who played up really did impress me and never looked out of place.
When we were playing well we were impressive.
